Handmade Oskoreia knife by Bladepoint
In ancient Norse mythology, Oskoreia was the Wild Hunt of Odin.
According to legend, Odin would ride across the skies accompanied by a large group of soul ravaging hunters. As the party drew closer the forests would go silent, and the only sounds would be a whining sound accompanied by barking from Odins dogs. To avoid the danger of being swept into the hunting party, one was supposed to throw a piece of iron or steel on the ground as an offering.
The will to hunt is stronger in some, and legend also speaks of those who sought to join the Oskoreia. Witches and Wildlings, forest people and huntsmen wanted to participate in the endless hunt. The hunt for gold, food, thrill or just your place in nature.
Where does your heart lay; Will you throw your steel or join the Oskoreia?
The Bladepoint Oskoreia is designed and handmade by Kaj-Mikael Storbacka, founder of Bladepoint. The design is inspired by traditional minimalist Nordic puukkos, but as a stronger and more modern fulltang construction. The scandi zero grind on the Oskoreia is 24 degrees, making this knife extremely capable in woodwork, Bushcraft and various camping chores. Choice of steel fell on 80CrV2 because of its tenacity. Being officially classed as a spring steel, I utilize the flexibility by keeping the handle at a lower hardness than the blade. This means that the area with the highest stress is also the area with the most flexibility.
The handle is made in stabilized natural curly birch cut in a cross section. These cuts are rare because well patterned planks are usually not big enough. The knife has yellow vulcanized fiber liners and brass corbys to match the chatoyancy of the wood. Stabilized wood is real wood that has been through a series of treatments that make it much stronger and durable than normal. On the most basic level the wood is submerged in stabilizing resin where it is subjected to a series of vacuum and soak cycles. After the resin has completely saturated the wood it is cured in an oven. The stabilization resin can be colored, and with additional coloring, soaking and curing steps stunning combinations are created which follow the woods own natural grain.
Durability is designed into the sheath as well. Hand stitched with thick terylene thread, seams glued for extra toughness. The material is proper 3,2mm thick vegetable tanned cattle leather. This specific leather is used because it has a more even quality than a side which usually vary in both thickness and stretch.
